A Design Wall Monday with Big Plans
>> Monday, August 30, 2010
The sun rose before me so my design wall is quite bright this morning. Here is a third of one of the big blocks for my Sew Modern Bee quilt in November. I was so excited putting it together - it looks just how my husband and I imagined it would. The quilt will be big enough for our queen bed and is for him - but I'll be sharing too:)
Here's a look at the plan as it's sketched out now. 5 giant churn dash blocks and 12 smaller ones to set between them in groups of 4. They will be liberated churn dashes - a modern take on my favourite traditional block.
I used the fabrics in this group for the first few blocks of my first giant churn dash. I plan on making them all a little different.
I still have this pile and a 1 more green and blue each to add to the mix. I'm cutting 4 inch strips off each print. I will need to figure out how many fabrics I will be sending to each of my bee mates. I'm also adjusting the width of strip I use in each churn dash. The one I'm working on will all be 4 inch strips, but I plan on variations too.
I know it seems like I get a lot done here, but actually, I just get alot started!! A few weeks ago I was really into this quilt - and would still love to be playing with it. But it's kind of my reward for getting other nitty gritty stuff done {like presents, writing patterns, machine quilting} You may see it again soon as I work towards decreasing my pile of unquilted tops.
A few weeks ago, kwiltsnkats (I think it was) asked what other words were going to be going on this quilt. Well, it is a work in progress and will be several panels actually. This panel I have pretty much planned out now and will include a few more words - Create, Explore, and Support. I made this in wordle last year and have it taped up in my design space. I have a rough idea of where I plan to put the rest of the words too, but I'm nurturing this one slowly.
Thanks for checking out my design wall this morning. To visit some more, click the links over at Judy's blog.

I really - really love the idea of using text on a quilt. Its totally next on my list of explorations!! Can't wait to see how yours progresses! Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Can't wait to see this one!
I love wordles. I use them all the time for class, but never thought of making one into a quilt. Great idea.
I love churn dash blocks and these are terrific fabrics to play with. Can't wait to see more of a "start". I'm good at starting things too. Sigh.
That's a lot on the go there! The churn dash fabrics are yummy!
