Playing with Selvages and Strings

I'm busy sewing up one of my projects for a blog tour NEXT weekend! How did that get here so fast?!?! I'm joining Kay Mackenzie for a playdate in her Scrap-Applique Playground! You won't want to miss it!

I gave myself permission yesterday to keep my satin stitch foot on while I sewed some selvages together. Great luck! Do you see that little arrow on the foot? It's great for helping you sew really close to the edge of the selvage.

I discovered when I was cutting my selvages for this project that I didn't have quite enough. So what did I do {since the rest of my selvage stash and quilt stuff is packed away already!}? I picked up some leftover strings from another part of the project and trimmed them to size. 

To make strings play happy with selvages you simply need to sew normal seams. In this photo you can see the string lined up right side down on the non sewn side of the selvage beneath. See it? {Easier to see than describe!} Sew your seam less than a 1/4 inch - using that helpful arrow on your foot.

Flip your string right side out - no need to press with an iron. Add your next selvage overlapping the edge of your string. Sew down the selvage. Ta - dah! Happy String!

I'm really happy with how the PARTS of this project have turned out. We'll see how well the parts go together!
